William Litchfield, 1st child of Godfrey
and Lucy
1815 Baptism: William Litchfield, son of Godfrey and Lucy, was baptized on 16 July 1815[1]
in the Parish Church of Belper, Derbyshire, England. The family was living in Belper and William’s
father Godfrey was working as a laborer.
1840
Marriage: William Litchfield was
married twice. His first wife was Ann
Ward. According to family records they
were married on 13 Jan 1840. I was able
to locate an index to their marriage but I have not as of yet been able to
locate the actual marriage record.[2]
1841 Census: William (25) was living with his wife Ann
(20) and brother Thomas (15) in
Ripley, Derbyshire. William is a
butcher.[3]
1844 Daughter born: Elizabeth Ann Litchfield, the daughter of William and
Ann. I was able to locate a record for her in the
FreeBMD index. Her birth was recorded
July- Sept 1844 in Belper, Derbyshire, England.[4]
1844 Newspaper Article: The following article was in the Derby Mercury Newspaper under the column, Committed to Derby County Gaol: “William Litchfield, of Belper, committed to hard labour for one
month, for maliciously breaking a quantity of earthenware, the property of Godfrey Litchfield.”[5] This William could be Godfrey’s son. William would have been 28 at the time.
1846 son is baptized: William Litchfield was the son of William and Ann
Litchfield. He was baptized on 20 April 1846 in Denby,
Derbyshire, England. The family was
living at Toadmore, Heage, Derbyshire, England where William Sr was working as
a butcher.[6]
1847 daughter is baptized: Mary
Litchfield, the daughter of William and Ann Litchfield, was baptized 3 Dec 1847 in the Heage
Chapel. The family was living in
Toadmore , Heage, Derbyshire, England where Mary’s father William was working
as an Inn Keeper and a butcher.[7]
1847
Death: William’s wife Ann Ward died at the age of 28. She was buried on 3 Dec 1847 at St Peter’s Church,

(5) and Mary (3). His is working as an Inn Keeper and a
butcher. He is a widower. His sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ward is living there keeping house. Lydia Brocklehurst (15) is also living there
as a house servant and helping with the Inn.[9]
1854
Child Dies: William Litchfield, son
of William and Ann died in 1854 at the age of 8 ½.
He was buried on the 3rd of December at St Peter’s Church in
Belper, Derbyshire, England.[10]
1860
Marriage: William (45) married Elizabeth Ward (37, sister to Ann) on
24 July 1860 in the Parrish Church of Duffield.
William is a Butcher. [11]
1861 Census: William Litchfield is living with his wife Elizabeth,
his two daughters Elizabeth (17) and
Mary (13) and his Father-in-law,
William Ward (70). He is working as a
butcher and the family is living in Heage.[12]
March
1865 Newspaper: In the advertisement section of The Derby Mercury, 29 March 1865, was an announcement for the sale
of two pieces of property owned by the late John Litchfield, of Heage. “For particulars, and to view the Premises,
enquire of Mr. Lynam, Beerhouse-keeper, Heage, and of Mr. William Litchfield, Toadmoor;”[13]
1865
March Newspaper: A notice was placed
in the Derby Mercury on March 29, 1865 for lots available for sale listing Mr
William Litchfield of Toadmoor as a contact person. “Lot 2, All those Two
Messuages, or Dwelling-houses (formerly in one, and called Marin House), with
the Cow-House, Garden and appurtenances thereto belonging, situate at Upper
Heage, in the County of Derby, and now or late in the occupation of Samuel
Hawkins and Robert Bilbie. Also, all that Croft, Piece or Parcel of Grass Land
called or Known by the name of Martin Close, adjoin the above premises, late in
the occupation of the said John Litchfield, and containing by recent survey,
together with the site of the Buildings
1A, 2B, 27p. For Particulars, and to view the Premises, enquire of Mr Lynam,
Beerhouse-keeper, Heage and of Mr William Litchfield, Toadmoor.”[14]
1865
Newspaper: A notice was published of John Litchfield’s
will, which was being proved in Derby in April 1865 by William Litchfield, who was one of the executors.[15]
1866
Death: William Litchfield died on 6
March 1866[16]
in Belper, Derbyshire, England.[17]
The will, dated Feb 20, 1866, states he lives in Toadmoor, in the parish of
Heage and is a farmer. He assigned two
of his friends, Joseph Alton and William Hall as his Trustees and Executors. He left everything to his wife for her use
and care of his “infant children”. Upon
her death, his real estate was to go to his son William Ward Litchfield when he turned 21. If William
died before age 21 the real estate was to be divided equally between his three
daughters, Elizabeth Anne, Mary and Anne Ward. If his wife was
still living when William Ward
Litchfield turned 21, he was to receive 50 pounds and then 100 pounds at
the age of 25. His daughters were to
receive 100 pounds each when they turned 21 or when they married or when his
wife and trustees felt it was prudent.
After his wife’s death the rest of his real and personal estate was to
be divided equally among his four children.
This will was witnessed by William Geavfes, a cordwainer from Toadmoor
and Jos. Bland from Belper.[18]
1866
Daughter Married: Elizabeth
Litchfield married her first cousin Herbert Hodgkinson on June 30, 1866 at
Saint Edmunds in Allestree, Derbyshire, England.[19]
1868
Daughter Married: Mary Litchfield
married William Slater on 29 Dec 1868 in Duffield, Derby, England. [20]
The index to this record states the bride’s father was William Lichfield. It is probably the correct family but I would
like to order the marriage record to see who the witnesses were and if her
father was deceased at the time. This record needs to be verified to prove it
is the correct family. The 1891 Census
for William Slater and his wife Mary, lists Mary’s name as “Mary Ward Slater”
which is consistent with the Mary and her siblings using “Ward” as a middle
name. I believe this is the correct
family.
1870
Death: His second wife, Elizabeth Ward died in early 1870[21]
just 4 years after her husband died.
Their two children were still quite young when they were orphaned, Ann
was nine and William was six.

Ellen
“Nellie” Wheeldon wife of William
Ward Litchfield. I have been unable to
locate a death record yet for Nellie Litchfield.
Recommendations:
· Search for the christening records
for Williams two wives, Ann and
Elizabeth Ward. They were sisters
and most likely came from the county of Straffordshire.
· Order the birth record for Elizabeth Litchfield, daughter of William
Litchfield born 1844, in Belper, Derby, England, found in volume 19, page
432.[50]
· William
Litchfield. I need to order the marriage certificate for William
and his first wife Ann through the General Registar Office. This record can be located in the Jan-March
1840, Belper, group in Volume 19 on page 323.[51]
· Elizabeth
Litchfield, daughter of William, granddaughter of Godfrey. Review
FHL film #1041426 for the marriage of Elizabeth and Herbert Hodgkinson, son of Lucy, Grandson of Godfrey. If that film is not available order the
marriage certificate for Elizabeth and Herbert through the General Registar
Office. This record can be found in the
Registration District of Belper, County of Derbyshire, year 1866 Apr-Jun Volume
7B, page 752.[52]
· William
Litchfield, son of William, grandson of Godfrey. Before ordering the certificates to clarify
this William’s identity I want to research through the census records and death
records. Since William senior remarried
and had another son named William, I am suspicious that his first son named
William passed away. This marriage occurred
the same year the second William was born.
It is possible he died the year he was married and his little brother
was named after him. Or he died earlier
and this record refers to another William Litchfield.
· Mary
Litchfield, daughter of William, granddaughter of Godfrey. Locate
the marriage record of Mary Litchfield and William Slater in FHL film # 1041433
to verify this is the correct Marry Litchfield.
If necessary I can order the marriage certificate through the General
Registar Office Registration District:Belper, County:Derbyshire, year: 1868,
Vol 7B, page 823.[53] I found another Mary Litchfield born to
William and Rebecca Litchfield in about 1848 in Sutton in Ashfield,
Nottinghamshire.[54] So the marriage certificate definitely needs
to be checked to make sure I have the correct Mary Litchfield.
· Ann Litchfield,
daughter of William, granddaughter of Godfrey.
According to the marriage record found at
new.familysearch.org and England marriage Index at familySearch.org, Ann is
married to a James Hatton.[55] I will have to locate this marriage
certificate to prove or disprove this marriage relationship. It can be found on
FHL microfilm 1,279,181[56] According to the index the marriage
certificate lists William as the father of this Ann Litchfield. Hopefully the witnesses will shed a light on
the correct family. I found an Ann
Litchfield born 1847 to William Litchfield still single living with her 71 year
old father William in Southill Bedfordshire, England. [57] This looks like the Ann Litchfield who
married James Hatton. The information on
new.familysearch.org needs to be corrected.
1) Newspaper articles
a) Godfrey accused
William (presumably his son) of
illegal activity.
2)
Inn Keepers:
a)
William
Litchfield and his son William Ward
Litchfield, were both inn keepers.
It would be interesting to follow track the history of the Inns in the
area. According to the 1851 Census
William was living in Toadmoor (later called Ambergate) and working as an Inn
Keeper. William Ward would have
inherited his father’s property when his mother died in 1870. Although when I looked for her will, her
effects were worth less than 200 pounds.[58] The 1911 Census shows William Ward is the
hotel proprietor for the White Hart Hotel in Chelmsford. I would like to do some research on the
internet about hotels in Toadmoor since I do not know the specific inn William
managed and the White Hart Hotel in Chelmsford to see if I can learn more about
the family. Eliza Litchfield’s (daughter of Godfrey) husband John Barker was also an Inn Keeper. They lived on Market Place at the Angel Inn
in 1851 and 1861. I would like to
research the history of this Inn as well. Perhaps there might be some
information in the Guild hall library.
3)
Wills:
a) William Slater
husband to Mary Ann Litchfield,
son-in-law to William Litchfield: I found a will for a William Slater that I
thought was the correct on. He died 20
April 1917. His will went to probate on
24 July 1917. He left all of his
belongings worth 163 pounds to his wife Mary Ann Slater. They lived at 46 Cedar Street, Derby,
England. He was an assistant engine fitter.
His will was witnessed by William Slater Jr and Rosa Gadsby.[59] I am suspicious of this will for three
reasons. 1. The wife was Mary Ann Slater
not Mary Ward Slater. 2. One of the
witnesses was William Slater junior but our family did not have a William
Slater Junior. 3. The location, this will states William lived in Derby however
I found the family in the 1911 Census in Chesterfield. I found a death record
for William Slater in Chesterfield for 1915.[60] The location matches and I think that is
probably the right death record but I need to order it to see if it is
correct. I have a copy of the will and
gave it the document # William 68 but I do not think it is the right one.
b)
William Litchfield was the executor in John Litchfield’s will.[61] I need to obtain a copy of this will to see
what other information about the family might be available. I am assuming this John Litchfield is
William’s uncle.
c)
Elizabeth Ward Litchfield went to probate on 6 Feb 1870.[62] I would like to find a copy of this
will. When I looked it up at the Family
History library, I was unable to locate it on the film. I need to spend some more time trying to
locate this will.
4)
Lichfield – Freeman connection:
a)
Elizabeth Litchfield, daughter of William Litchfield, married her first cousin Herbert Hodgkinson. Herbert
died in 1875. Elizabeth remarried a Thomas
Freeman. When I originally started
this project, I found a family group sheet compiled by my Grandmother Beulah
Lichfield stating William Litchfield
(Elizabeth’s father) had married a Lucy Freeman and then her sister Polly
Freeman. I searched for these marriage
records and could not find a single reference.
I did find marriage records for William
to Ann Ward and her sister Elizabeth Ward which I believe are
correct. I find it interesting that now
I find a reference to a Freeman family but instead of William marrying into
that family, it is his daughter Elizabeth who marries a Freeman. I would like
to follow this Freeman family and see if I can find any other connections to my
Lichfield family. I will start with
looking for Thomas Freeman in the 1871.
