Eliza
Litchfield, 2nd child of Godfrey and Lucy
1815 Birth: John James Barker, Eliza’s
future husband. According to family records he was baptized on 30 May, 1815 in
Nottinghamshire. Search for a parish

1860 Newspaper Article: Thomas Litchfield of

Recommendations:
·
John James Barker, spouse of
Eliza Litchfield.
·
Find the parish baptismal record for John Barker. According to the 1841 census, he was born in
Nottinghamshire about 1815 to Joseph and Mary Barker.
·
I found a burial record for a John Barker in Belper in 1900, dying at
the age of 70.[15] He could have been born in 1813 and
christened in 1815. I found another record that might match a little better
with a John Barker dying in 1879 at the age of 64 in Derby, St Peter. [16]
This is a good possibility.
·
Children of Eliza Litchfield
and John James Barker.
· I am a bit baffled by the lack of
information for the family of Eliza Litchfield Barker. I have been unable to find any baptismal
records for the children. Perhaps they
changed religious affiliation since their marriage. I have not been able to locate the births in
the national registry either nor have I been able to find census records,
marriage records or death records for their children once they reached
adulthood.
· There is a note next to Eliza’s name
on the family group sheet for Godfrey and Lucy Litchfield prepared by Beulah
Menlove Lichfield indicating “we have a record of the family”. I searched through Beulah’s Book of
Remembrance for a sheet on the Barker family but I did not find one. I believe my cousin Rolaine has Grandma’s
research notes that I should be able to search through to see if I can find
more information on them.
·
I searched the marriage indexes at FamilySearch, new.familysearch,
findmypast and freeBMD for the children of Eliza and John. I also researched FHL film# 2080805 marriage
indexes in Belper chapelry (St Peter).[17] No Barker’s were found with the exception of
Annie Eliza Barker age 24, Spinster from Brookside, Belper with no father
listed. This marriage does not match
very well since the Annie we are looking for would have been 48 years old not
24 at the time of this marriage.
·
I found two death records for an Annie Barker in Belper, March 1850[18]
and June 1861.[19] If 1850 is the correct one, Annie would have
been about 6 years old. If the 1861 date
is right, she would have died at about the age of 17. I need to order these
death records to see if they shed any light on the family.
·
According to the Census records of 1851, 1861, 1871 the family was
living in Belper, always on Angel Street.
The children listed on the 1851 census fit according to age but not
according to name. I wonder if “Harriette” (1851) is “Annie”(1861) , if
“William”(1851) is “Patrick”(1861) and
if “Joseph”(1851) is “Godfrey”(1861). I will need to search for all
of the above names. FHL film # 2080803[20]
contains the Parish marriage register for Belper. I need to do a thorough search of this
register to see if I can find any Barker marriages.
·
New.familysearch.org list the children for Eliza and John as Isaac
Patrick born 1842 and Annie Barker born 1844.[21] I did a search for them in Derbyshire on
Ancestry.com.uk and did not find any birth or census records matching this
family configuration. Perhaps church
death records might show they belonged to Eliza and John’s family. I have been unable to find any baptism
records in the Church of England for the children. Perhaps a search of the records in the other
local churches might produce some results.
