Patrick Litchfield, 7th
Child of Godfrey and Lucy Litchfield
1828 Birth: Patrick was baptized 28 Aug 1828 in Chapelry of Belper. His family was living in Heage where is
father was farming.[1]
1831 Baptism: Eleanor Clifford baptized
19 Jun 1831 in Kegworth, Leicester, England.
Daughter of Thomas Clifford and Sarah.[2]
1841 Census: Patrick (12) was record on
this census in Crich at the home of George and Mary Bowmer.[3]
1851 Census: Patrick (22) is unmarried,
lodging at #50 Green Lane in Derby, St Peter’s Parish and working as a
chandler.[4]
1853 Marriage: Patrick Litchfield married Eleanor Clifford at St. Peters Church,
Derbyshire, England in 1853.[5]
1855 Birth: George Litchfield[6]
1856 Birth: Sarah Jane
Litchfield[7]
1856 Baptisms: George Litchfield and his
sister Sarah Jane, children of Patrick and Eleanor, were both baptized 31
Oct 1856 at St Peter’s Church in Belper, Derbyshire, England. The family was living on Bag Lane. Patrick’s occupation was Republican (ran a
pub).[8] George was probably the older sibling since
the index for his birth certificate is dated for 1855 while Sarah’s is dated
for 1856.
1861 Census: Patrick (32)
living in Derby on Bag Lane with wife Eleanor
(30), son George (5) and
daughter Sarah Jani (4). His occupation is “Publican”.[9]
1862 Death: George Litchfield 7 years old, died in Derby, St. Peter.[10] It is
possible this is our George since he is not listed on the 1871 Census. Or he might have been listed somewhere else
as an apprenticed. This certificate
should be ordered to see if the parents are listed. (Needs to be researched to
see if this is the right George Litchfield)
1863
Newspaper Article: The following
article appeared in The Derby Mercury on
Oct 21, 1863 in the Borough Police Court Section: “Patrick Litchfield, landlord of the Woodman’s Stroke, Baglane, was
brought up on remand from the day previous, charged with beating his wife, Ellen Litchfield. – The complainant
said on Saturday evening he got her upstairs, beat her all over the body, and
said that as there were no witnesses, he would murder her. He knocked her down, and inflicted a wound on
her leg by throwing a pail at her. She
wished, however, to give him another trial. – Mr. Hilton said in these cases he
wished it to be understood that he had the power to prosecute, even if the wife
wished to withdraw the charge. – Inspector Fearn said the language prisoner
made use of was dreadful. – The Bench said they should send him to gaol for 28
days, with hard labour. He deserved six
months. – The complainant begged hard for her husband to be allowed another trial,
but the Bench said a month in prison would do him good.”[11]
1864 Baptism: Clara is
baptized in 1864 at St Peter’s Church in Derby, Derbyshire, England.[12]
1871 Census: Patrick (43)
living in Leeds and working as a “Tallow Chandler”. His wife Eleanor
(40), daughter Sarah Jane (14)
and daughter Clara (11) are living
there as well. Eleanor’s occupation is
dress maker, Sarah is a weaver and Clara is in school.[13]
1880 Death; Patrick died in
the 1st quarter of 1880 at the age of 52 in Nottinghamshire.[14]
(Needs more research to verify it is the correct Patrick Litchfield.)
1881 Census: Eleanor (50)
widowed, is living at 36 Cross Stamford St, Leeds, Yorkshire, with Sarah Jane
(24) and Clara Louisa (16). Eleanor and
her daughters are working as dress makers.[15]
1897 Marriage: Clara Louise
Litchfield married in the 1st quarter of 1897 in Leeds.[16]
1901 Census: Eleanor Litchfield (70)
living in Leeds, Yorkshire with her married daughter Clara L Towle and
son-in-law Allan Towle.[17]
1911 Census: Eleanor Litchfield (80)
living in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire with her married daughter Clara L Towle and
son-in-law Allan Towle.[18]
1918 Death: Clara Towle died
in the 3rd quarter of 1918 in Nottinhamshire.[19]

1841 living with the Bommer family maybe related

Patrick
Litchfield. I found a death record for a Patrick Litchfield in 1880.[20] The age at time of death fits Patrick’s birth
year however, this record shows he died in Nottinghamshire instead of Yorkshire
where the family had been living for more than ten years. My family records state he died about
1898. Patrick is listed in 1882 on his
daughter Sarah Jane’s marriage record.
It does not say he is deceased.
However, the 1881 census record lists his wife Eleanor as a widow. This death date needs further research. Perhaps if I ordered the death record, it would
reveal more information.
Eleanor
·
Search FHL British film 952280[21]
for the baptism record for Eleanor
Clifford, Patrick’s wife, born in Kegworth, Leicestershire, between 1825
and 1831.
·
Find in the 1890 census No record of her death has been found yet.
·
Find her death record after 1911 where she can
be found in the census still living with her daughter, Clara and son-in-law Allan
Towle.
·
Find the marriage record for Patrick and Eleanor. Search British fiche 6905205 for extracted
information on Heage Parish registers.[22] The information on the microfiche should
point me toward a film to find the original document.
George Litchfield.
·
I am unclear who George married if he married at
all. He could have first married Annie
Maria Green at St Peter’s Church in Belper, Derbyshire, England in 1890.[23]
·
Six years later a George Litchfield married Martha Pidcock in Belper at the Baptist
Chapel.[24] Four year after that marriage, in 1900, I
found another marriage record for a George Litchfield to Sarah Ann Shaw also in
Belper.[25]
Find the three marriage records for George Litchfield. Search British fiche
6905205 for extracted information on Heage Parish registers.[26] The information on the microfiche should
point me toward a film to find the original document. I may have to order the marriage certificates
through the General Registrars Office to figure out who each George Litchfield
is on the three marriage records. Would
also be helpful to search the census records for other George Litchfields in
the area.

Death: George Litchfield 7 years
old, died in Derby, St. Peter.[27] It is
possible this is our George since he is not listed on the 1871 Census. Or he might have been listed somewhere else
as an apprenticed. This certificate
should be ordered to see if the parents are listed. Maybe there is a notice in
the newspaper that might list the parents of George Lichfield? Check for other George Litchfield’s born at
the same time in the Census records. I
wonder if the death of his son George was a catalyst for Patrick to beat
Eleanor in Oct 1863.
Sarah Jane Litchfield
·
Possibly she married a William Thomas Campbell, 1899 in Northamptionshire.[28]
·
I also found a 1891 Census record for a Sarah
Jane Robinson age 34 married to Henry Robinson.
They are living in Leeds.[29] But
needs to be researched further. I need
to find a marriage record for a Sarah Jane Litchfield and a Henry Robinson.
·
Sarah Jane
Litchfield Robinson, daughter of Patrick. I found a record for a Sarah J Robinson who died at the age of 74
in Leeds North, Yorkshire West Riding, England.[30] This information all fits but I know there
were several Sarah Robinsons in the area.
I would like to order this death record to see if I can positively
identify this is the correct person.
Clara Litchfield
·
Clara married an Allan Towle. I still need to find that marriage
record. According to the 1911 Census,
they had been married for 13 years, so in 1898.
This marriage record still needs to be located. I know Allan is her spouse because her mother
Eleanor was living with them in the 1901 and 1911 census.
·
I found a record for a Clara Towle, age 54, who
died sometime Jul – Sept 1918 in Basford, Nottinghamshire.[31] I am suspicious of this record because in
1911, Clara was living in Cleesthrope, Lincolnshire. I need to check these two locations on a map
to see how far apart they are. This
death record should be ordered to see what further information it might
contain.
