Matha Litchfield for Ted

Ted I did a little sleuthing.  Martha Litchfield was born about 1866 to Samuel and Emily Litchfield.  Samuel was born about 1835.  He had a sister named Annie born about 1840.  Their father was John Litchfield born about 1796.  Martha was listed as living at home on the 1871 and 1891 census but not the 1881 census.  She had an illegitimate son named Arthur Litchfield in about 1888.  Could her aunt Annie be the one who married Issac Shore?

George Litchfield and Hannah Brooks

George Litchfield, 10th Child of Godfrey and Lucy:

1839 Birth: George was baptized on 3 March 1839 in Belper, Derbyshire, England.[1]
1841 Census: At two years of age, George was living with his parents and three brothers, Godfrey (15), Noah (10), and Octavius (8).  Godfrey is farming.[2]
1848 Birth: Hannah Brooks, wife of George Litchfield, was baptized on 23 Jul 1848. [3]
1851 Census: Twelve year old George is in school.  He lives with his two parents and three brothers, Godfrey (28), Thomas (24) and Octavius (16).  His father, Godfrey is farming 65 acres.[4]
1861 Census: Caught George visiting with his brother Octavius, his sister-in-law Sarah and niece Lucy.  George was 23, unmarried and working as a carpenter.[5]
1870 Marriage: George Litchfield (31) married Hannah Brooks (28) on Oct 28, 1870 in Duffield, Derbyshire, England.  George’s occupation is “Joiner”. [6]
1871 Census: At the age of 33, George was living with his wife Hannah (27) and his mother Lucy (83) on Pennicorn Farm where he was farming about 50 acres.  A thirteen year old  farm servant/indoor servant, William Holmes, was also living there.[7]

1878 Baptisms: The children (Jane, Annie and George Edward) of George Litchfield were all baptized on 10 June 1878 in the Christ Church.[10]  At this time the family was living in St. Peter and George was working as a joiner. This record was in the Christ Church Baptism book but stated their “abode” was S. Peter, other people on the page had Christ church listed as their abode.  I wonder if the baptism took place at St. Peter but was registered in the Christ Church book.
1881 Census: George (42) is living in Belper and working as a “joiner”.  Living with him is his wife Hannah (40), his daughters Jane (10) and Annie (8) and his 5 year old son George.[11]

1901 Census: Hannah Litchfield (61) is living in Belper on Broadholme (or Fishermen’s res?) with her two daughters Jane (29), Annie (27), her son George (24), his wife Susan (28) and her infant grandson.  She is not working but Jane and Annie are net menders and George is a joiner.[15]
1904 Marriage: Annie Litchfield (29) married George Warnier Cupit (28) on May 28, 1904 at St. Peter’s Church, Belper, Derbyshire, England.  George had been living in Riddings and working as a laborer[16]

Children of George Litchfield, Grandchildren of Godfrey and Lucy Litchfield:

Annie Litchfield Cupit.  I have been unable to locate a death record.
George Warnier Cupit, spouse of Annie Litchfield.  See recommendation section.
Recommendations:
Hannah Brooks, wife of George
·       Look for the baptism record.  She was baptized on 23 Jul 1848, in FHL British Film 1752218 item 5, page 6.[24]
Find the will Hannah left - Litchfield, Hannah of Broadholme, Belper, Derbyshire widow died 26 Jun 1927  Administration Derby 26 Aug to Jane Litchfield spinster.  Effects £9 13s. 11d.

Jane Litchfield, daughter of George
·       A Jane Litchfield married John William Shrives on Sept 30, 1894 in Surrey England.[25]  This is not our Jane Litchfield because she is on the 1901 census still living with her mother and not married.  I am suspicious she never married.
·       I found a death index for a Jane Litchfield dying in 1951 at the age of 79 in Welton, Lincolnshire.  The death age matches Jane’s birth year but the death location does not match.  The last census available is the 1911 Census.  Jane is 39, single and living at Broadholme, Belper, Derbyshire, England.  It is possible she moved to Lincolnshire sometime during the ensuing 40 years.  This death record requires more research.  Check to see if she left a will.
Annie Litchfield, daughter of George
·       Find the death record for Annie.
George Warnier Cupit, spouse of Annie Litchfield, daughter of George
·       I found a record for a George W Cupit, age 82, who died sometime between Jul-Sept 1957 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.[26]  This is a strong match except for the location so further investigation is required.  Perhaps George and Annie moved to Lincolnshire and Jane moved with them.  Checking city directories for the time period between 1911 and 1950 might help me pinpoint their location during these years.

Recommendations:
Octavius:  Something happened to Octavius after his wife died.  He had all of the children and a general servant in 1881 but by 1891, he was missing and his children were either living on their own or with their older siblings or other relatives.  Then in 1901 and 1911, Octavius is in the poor house.  I wonder if I will be able to find records at the Union House that might shed some light on the subject.
George Litchfield, son of Octavius, I found an index for the marriage record of George Litchfield and Hannah Green stating the marriage can be found in the 1890 Register 2 page 99.[52]  I need to check FHL Film #208083 to find this record.
Octavius Litchfield, son of Octavius,.  Locate Octavius’ marriage record to Annie Yates on FHL Film # 1751993.[53]
Lucy Litchfield, daughter of Octavius, Locate Lucy’s marriage record to Reuben in the FHL Film # 1041434.
Will left by Lucy Ellen White (Octavius, Godfrey) of 62 King-streetLoughborough, Leicestershire (wife of Reuben White)  died 8 Nov 1831 Probate LONDON 5 Jan to the said Rueben Whire retired lodging house keeper George White Pinter and John Edward Barker builder.  Effects £266 6s.
William Litchfield, son of Octavius, New.familysearch.org has William Litchfield married to Martha Power Baker. I have not been able to locate an index for this marriage.  However I did find a christening record for a John William Litchfield, son of William Litchfield and Martha Power.  This child was christened at the Primitive Methodist Church, Ripley Circuit, Derby, England.  The Primitive Methodist Church records might have a marriage record for this couple.  One possible record to check would be FHL Film #175222 items 1-3.  This microfilm contains marriages 1874-1903.
1891 Census is a little confusing for William Litchfield .  He is not at his sister’s house with his other siblings.  There are two 16 year old William Litchfields in the area in 1891.  I think our William is living with his aunt and uncle, John and Eliza Barker in Blackwell, Derbyshire, England.[54]  My guess the other William Litchfield is living in Holbrook and working as a servant for John W Gore.  Selina Selby (25) is also working as a servant in the same household.[55]  Since Octavious’ son William married a woman by the name of Martha Power Barker which is also the name of his first cousin and daughter of John and Eliza (Power) Barker, I think the first census is correct.  But I need to order the marriage certificate to make sure this is the correct family.

Noah Litchfield, son of Octavius, Locate Noah’s marriage record by searching through Computer Printout of the Heage Chapelry found on FHL Fiche 6905205.

Hannah Green Litchfield, wife of George Litchfield and daughter-in-law of Octavius. I was unable to locate a death record for a Hannah Litchfield in the Belper area.  George died in 1903 at the age of 41.  Perhaps Hannah remarried and had a different last name at the time of her death or possibly she moved away.  More research needs to be done here.

Eliza Litchfield, daughter of Octavius.  I have not been able to make positive identification yet as to whom Eliza married.  I believe it was Edward Langton.  I found several death records for Eliza Jane Langton.  My distant cousin, Glenda Wright has her born in 1878, married to Edward Fardon and dying in 1963.[56] I have been unable to find a marriage record in the area for an Eliza Litchfield to and Edward Fardon however I did find a record for an Eliza Litchfield to an Edward Langton.  Going on the assumption that this record could be correct, I found a death record for an Eliza Jane Langton who died 1841 at the age of 62 (making her birth date in 1879) in Belper.[57] The possible birth records I have found have her born in 1877.  So this death record is close.  I need to order a copy of the marriage record first to verify the Eliza Litchfield married to Edward Langton really is the correct one.

1871 Birth: Eliza Litchfield is born in March 1871.  Her birth is recorded in Belper.[58]  This is just an index, she might not belong to this family or she might have died and the next daughter born in about 1877 was named Eliza.  I need to find the birth record of the Eliza Litchfield born in March 1871 to see who her parents were.  It they are Octavious and Sarah, then I need to find a death record for her before 1877 when their daughter Eliza was born.

Possibly - George Litchfield, Son of Octavius:  There was an article in The Derby Mercury on 16 Sept 1891 about a George Litchfield, a laborer, of Belper who helped a woman who was being assaulted. “An inquest was held at the Seven Stars Inn, near Belper, on Saturday, respecting the death of Joseph Shaw, miner, aged 32 years, who died on Thursday under very sad circumstances.  It was stated that deceased went to the Seven Stars, about noon on Wednesday, and remained there until six o’clock.  He had drink, but he conducted himself properly when in the house, though he was said by the landlord to be a “little wee bit under the influence of beer.”  The father of the deceased was also at the house, he having gone about nine o’clock in the morning.  It was Denby Wakes ___ and the men had a holiday.  About six at night the father and son left the Seven Stars.  As they were going on the road a quarrel arose.  The son struck the father, who could not retaliate, he being too drunk to resist or defend himself.  The wife, of the deceased man came up, and he struck her.  George Litchfield, a laborer, of Belper, took the part of the father and wife.  After the deceased had hit the wife twice Litchfield protected her.  The deceased ran at her again, intending to strike her with a basket, but Litchfield put out his hand to interpose.  Shaw ran against it, fell forward and alighted with his head on the ground.  He became insensible and died the next day without having recovered consciousness. A post mortem examination was made…”Death from effusion of blood on the brain, caused by an accidental fall, and accelerated by drnk and excitement.”  Deceased leaves a wife and seven young children.”  I am not sure where to look to figure out if the George Litchfield mentioned in this article is Octavius’ son.  One way to try and figure it out is to see through the census records and city directories if there is more than one George Litchfield in the area.
