First Generation
In the
center of England was the small farming village of Heage which was built in two
parts. High Heage built on the top of
the swelling hills while Low Heage occupied the lower flat lands. It is situated two miles the Amber River
which flows into the nearby and larger Derwent River. There is a spring nearby known for its
healing power. The swelling hills provide ample grazing land for the sheep and
dairy cattle. Cereal and root crops are
sown in the fields of the lower grounds where the soil is said to be “strong
and heavy”. Although the area has been
populated for hundreds of years, not much remains to remind the inhabitants of
those ancient times. A violent storm
pulverized the area in 1545 razing most of the buildings including the original
wooden St Luke Chapel. The church was
rebuilt in 1661, this time out of stone so it could withstand the weather. The
Crow Tree Farm house and Heage Hall, both built in the 16th Century survived
the great storm to remind future inhabitants of days long past. At the time of Godfrey’s birth in 1788[1] the
town’s windmill was in the planning stages.
Godfrey was the fourth child
born to William Litchfield and Hannah Agard. The Litchfield family had been in the area for
many generations, at least back to the middle 1500s. John Litchfield, Godfrey’s 7th
great-grand father was born in Derbyshire five years before the great storm.[2] Heage is just 2 ½ miles N.E. of Belper which
was a booming town thanks to Jedediah Strutt and his cotton mills. At the time of Godfrey’s birth new houses
were being built to support the growing population needed for the Cotton Mill
Industry.
Twenty-six year old Godfrey,
married Lucy Boamer (on March 29, 1814 in Duffield. [3] Lucy, two years younger than Godfrey, had been born in the nearby town
of Pentrich on Sept 13, 1790 to Patrick Boamer and Mary Harrison.[4]
Godfrey and Lucy had ten
known children. They raised their family
on “Dunge Farm” in Heage. In 1851,
Godfrey was farming about 65 acres on the farm[5] most
likely some cash crops and some animals.
Lucy’s grandson, William (son of Godfrey and Dorothy) said his
grandmother Lucy would take her basket of farm goods once a week and walk the
three miles south to Belper where she bartered for the things she needed. William remembers she always brought a treat
home for him.[6] Most likely she made her trek to Belper on
Saturdays which was the town’s Market Day.
Godfrey
had a 1st cousin named Godfrey (born in about 1783 in Belper) whose
father (Godfrey’s uncle) was also named Godfrey. In the 1841 & 1851 census, this cousin
named Godfrey was living in Belper, Derbyshire.
There are several incidences in the 1840’s when a Godfrey Litchfield is
listed in the paper. At this point it is
unclear which Godfrey is mentioned in the paper. Circumstantial evidence suggests at least
some of the articles discuss the Godfrey who this paper is about because the
other individuals listed in the paper belong in this Godfrey’s family.
On Wednesday, August 30, 1843 the Derby
Mercury Newspaper ran the following article under the column, Committed to Derby County Gaol: “Isaac Hodgkinson, of Belper, committed to
hard labour for 2 months, for being found in the house of Godfrey Litchfield,
for the purpose of committing a felony.”[7] Isaac Hodgkinson married Godfrey’s daughter
Lucy in 1843.
On Wednesday, Jan 17, 1844, the
following article was in the Derby Mercury Newspaper under the column, Committed to Derby County Gaol: “William Litchfield, of Belper, committed to
hard labour for one month, for maliciously breaking a quantity of earthenware,
the property of Godfrey Litchfield.”[8] Both Godfrey’s had sons named William
who were born within a year of each other.
I wonder if Godfrey and Lucy were estranged from their eldest son
William because in the Dorothy Sarah Jennison history, Godfrey (jr) is called
the oldest son even though in reality he was the second son. If that is the case, this newspaper article
is likely discussing the Godfrey and William of this paper.
Tragedy struck the family when their
son, Noah died at the age of 19. He was
buried on 2 Nov 1849 at St Peter’s Church (Heage Chapelry).[9] Newspaper reports the death occurred on 29
Oct. and states Noah is the 5th
son of Godfrey Litchfield. The family is
living in Heage Common.[10]
The final
newspaper article does appear to belong to our Godfrey due to the reference of
the family living in “Broadholme” which is between Heage and Belper and has
belonged to the family for generations. “George Hannibal and William Brant, nailors,
of Belper, were charged by Godfrey Litchfield of Broadholme, near Belper, with
stealing from him one canvas bag, containing 30£ in gold and silver. All the parties had been drinking at several
public-houses during the day, and as the prisoners had been seen searching the
prosecutor’s pockets while he was asleep at the Tiger Inn, they were strongly
suspected of being the parties who had committed the robbery; but there being a
doubt the prisoners were discharged.[11]
Godfrey passed away at the age of 84. He was buried on 23 Jan 1862 at St Peter’s
Church, Belper, Derbyshire, England.[12] Lucy lived for eleven more years. She appears to have spent her last few years
with her youngest son George and his wife Hannah, living on Pennicorn Farm
where George was farming about 50 acres.
Lucy Boamer Litchfield died in 1871.
She was buried on 18th Dec 1871 at St Peter’s Church, Belper,
Derbyshire, England.[13]

Second Generation
William Litchfield, 1st child of Godfrey
and Lucy
William Litchfield was baptized on 16 July 1815[24]
in the Parish Church of Belper, Derbyshire, England. At the time the family was living in Belper
and William’s father Godfrey was working as a laborer. His sister Eliza was
born when William was three with each sibling arriving every two to three years
until he eventually had nine siblings.
William Litchfield married
Ann Ward on 13 Jan 1840. He was twenty
five at the time of his marriage. The
young couple lived in Heage. William
worked as a butcher and his younger brother Thomas was living with him or just
visiting on the day the 1841 census was taken.
Four years after their marriage, William and Ann welcomed their new
daughter Elizabeth in the fall of 1844.[25]
There might have been
trouble between William and his father Godfrey earlier in the year. The following article appeared in the Derby
Mercury Newspaper on Wednesday,
Jan 17, 1844 under the column, Committed
to Derby County Gaol: “William
Litchfield, of Belper, committed to hard labour for one month, for maliciously
breaking a quantity of earthenware, the property of Godfrey Litchfield.”[26] Since there is another Godfrey and William
Litchfield in the Belper area, it is unclear exactly who the individuals are that
are mentioned in this article.
William and Ann
welcomed a son into the family. Baby
William was baptized on 20 April 1846 in Denby, Derbyshire, England. The family was living at Toadmore, (which
later became Ambergate), Derbyshire, England where William Sr was working as a
butcher.[27] Mary Litchfield was baptized 3 Dec 1847 in
the Heage Chapel. The family was living
in Toadmore , Heage, Derbyshire, England where Mary’s father William was
working as an Inn Keeper and a butcher.[28] Unfortunately, Mary’s mother was buried on
her baptism day. Ann Ward Litchfield
died at the age of 28. She was buried on
3 Dec 1847 at St Peter’s Church, Belper, Derbyshire, England.[29] After seven years of marriage, William found
himself widowed and responsible for the care for their three young
children. He recruited the help of his
sister-in-law Elizabeth Ward. (I wonder
if his oldest daughter, Elizabeth, was named after her aunt). Twenty-seven year old Elizabeth moved in with
the family living in Toadmoor, to keep house and take care of the children. William was running an Inn and working as a
butcher. Another young woman, fifteen year old, Lydia Brockhurst also lived
with the family to help William take care of the Inn.[30]
William had to face
the grief of losing another loved one when his young son William died at the
age of 8 ½. He was buried at St Peter’s
Church in Belper on the same day as his mother, December 3rd, just 7
years later.[31] William married his sister-in-law Elizabeth
Ward on 24 July 1860 in the Parrish Church of Duffield.[32]
By 1861, William’s father-in-law
William Ward had moved in with the family.
They were still living in Heage where William was working as a butcher.[33]
Elizabeth and Ann
welcomed a baby girl named Ann Ward Litchfield into the family on July 21, 1861
and a son named William Ward Litchfield on Oct 31, 1863.[34]
William became an
executor to the estate of a John Litchfield in 1865. This John could have been his uncle. The following articles were printed in the Derby
Mercury:
1. In the
advertisement section of The Derby Mercury, 29 March 1865, was an announcement
for the sale of two pieces of property owned by the late John Litchfield, of
Heage. “For particulars, and to view the
Premises, enquire of Mr. Lynam, Beerhouse-keeper, Heage, and of Mr. William
Litchfield, Toadmoor;”[35]
2. A notice was
placed in the Derby Mercury on March 29, 1865 for lots available for sale
listing Mr William Litchfield of Toadmoor as a contact person. “Lot 2, All
those Two Messuages, or Dwelling-houses (formerly in one, and called Marin
House), with the Cow-House, Garden and appurtenances thereto belonging, situate
at Upper Heage, in the County of Derby, and now or late in the occupation of
Samuel Hawkins and Robert Bilbie. Also, all that Croft, Piece or Parcel of
Grass Land called or Known by the name of Martin Close, adjoin the above
premises, late in the occupation of the said John Litchfield, and containing by
recent survey, together with the site of
the Buildings 1A, 2B, 27p. For Particulars, and to view the Premises, enquire
of Mr Lynam, Beerhouse-keeper, Heage and of Mr William Litchfield, Toadmoor.”[36]
3. A notice was
published of John Litchfield’s will, which was being proved in Derby in April
1865 by William Litchfield, who was one of the executors.[37]
William
died on 6 March 1866[38]
in Belper, Derbyshire, England.[39]
The will, dated Feb 20, 1866, states he lives in Toadmoor, in the parish of
Heage and is a farmer. He assigned two
of his friends, Joseph Alton and William Hall as his Trustees and
Executors. He left everything to his
wife for her use and care of his “infant children”. Upon her death, his real estate was to go to
his son William Ward Litchfield when he turned 21. If William died before age 21 the real estate
was to be divided equally between his three daughters, Elizabeth Anne, Mary and
Anne Ward. If his wife was still living
when William Ward Litchfield turned 21, he was to receive 50 pounds and then
100 pounds at the age of 25. His
daughters were to receive 100 pounds each when they turned 21 or when they
married or when his wife and trustees felt it was prudent. After his wife’s death the rest of his real
and personal estate was to be divided equally among his four children. This will was witnessed by William Greaves, a
cordwainer from Toadmoor and Jos. Bland from Belper.[40]
His second wife, Elizabeth
Ward died in early 1870[41]
just 4 years after her husband died.
Their two children were still quite young when they were orphaned, Ann
was nine and William was six.

Eliza Litchfield, 2nd child of Godfrey and
Lucy
Eliza
Litchfield was baptized on 9 Nov 1817.[47] She was the oldest daughter and second child
in a family of ten. Most likely she had
a lot of responsibility in the care of her younger siblings. Elizabeth Litchfield married John James
Barker on 12 Jan 1841 in Duffield, Derbyshire, England. John was two years her
senior and working as a carpenter. He
was baptized in the neighboring county of Derbyshire. They started their married life at the home
of her in-laws, Joseph and Mary Baker in Radford, Nottinghamshire. Her father-in-law Joseph was running a pub. [48]
John
and Eliza have two children while living in Nottinghamshire, Harriet born in
1841 and William born in 1846. By the
time their son John is born in1849, they have moved to Eliza’s home county of
Derbyshire. John becomes an Inn Keeper
for the Angel Inn on Market Place in Belper.
Son Joseph is born in 1851. A
thirteen year old girl, Sarah Hawkin is working as a house servant for the
family.[49] Their last child Hannah is born during this
time in 1858.[50]
In December 1860,
Hannah’s husband John Barker reports a theft of three cow chains. Thomas Litchfield of Toadmoor is accused of
the theft. Most likely this Thomas is a
relative of Hannah’s and possibly it is her brother.[51]
Eliza
Litchfield Barker died late
in 1864. She was buried on 16 Nov 1864
at St. Peter’s Church, Belper, Derbyshire, England.[52] After Eliza’s death, John Barker continued to
live on Market Place in Belper. His
fourteen year old daughter is also living there and he is running a pub.[53]

Hannah Litchfield, 3rd child of Godfrey and Lucy
Hannah
Litchfield was baptized on 6 Feb 1820 in Heage, Derbyshire, England.[60] She had two sisters and seven brothers, six
of whom were younger than her. She grew
up on a farm in Heage, Derbyshire, England.
She probably helped on the farm as well as with her younger
siblings. Her life must have been wild and crazy with
so many little boys running around. She
left home in her late teens to work as a female servant in Matlock, Derbyshire,
England. [61] At the age of twenty-six, Hannah married a butcher
by the name of John Moore Power on Dec. 7th, 1846 in Duffield. They had a lot in common as both of them had
grown up on a farm. [62] They moved to John’s hometown of Pentrich
shortly after their marriage and never left. Their first child, Martha, was born in
Pentrich and baptized on 20 Feb 1848.[63] Three years later in 1851, they were still
living in Pentrich in the home of John’s father, Charles, who was farming 7 ½
acres. John was supporting his family
working as a Butcher.[64] Around Martha Power’s eighth birthday, her
little sister was born. Eliza Power was
baptized in Pentrich on 6 Jan 1856.[65] The little family lived with Charles, John’s
father, until he passed away, sometime between 1861 and 1871. After his father
died, John became a farmer as well as a butcher. [66] Twenty years later the 1891 Census listed
Hannah and John‘s granddaughter Martha P Barker as living with them. John is in his 70’s but he is still farming. [67] He died in September of that year. [68]
Hannah Litchfield Power died four years after John, at the age of 74, on March
1895, in Belper, Derbyshire, England.[69]

Godfrey Litchfield 4th child of Godfrey and Lucy
Godfrey was
born on a farm in Heage, Derbyshire, England on 17 Feb 1822. He was not baptized until his little sister
Lucy came along. They were baptized together
on 7 Jan 1824 in the Heage Chapel.[72] At
fifteen, Godfrey was working as an agricultural laborer in Heage. He was living at home with five of his
brothers and his parents. [73] Even though Godfrey was the fourth child,
much of the farm work fell to him. William,
seven years his senior, had already moved on to start his own family. The next two children were girls, so from the
time Godfrey was an early teen; he was the oldest son living at home. He stayed on helping on the farm through his
early twenties.
Dorothy Sarah Jennison was born on 4 Jan 1827
in the neighboring county of Nottinghamshire, England.[74] She was baptized on 30 Jan 1827 at St Mary’s
Church in Nottingham. Her father William Jenison was a stone mason and the
family was living on Gedling St.[75] Dorothy learned how to make bonnets from her
mother and enjoying her home life with three younger brothers and two younger
sisters. [76] Dorothy was a good reader spending many hours
reading the bible. Her father, a
religious man, enjoyed discussing religion with Dorothy. Her happy life shattered with the untimely
death of her father on 12 Oct 1842.
Dorothy’s mother, Matildea, secured employment in a millinery shop. Sixteen year old Dorothy was put in charge of
her younger siblings at home. By 1851,
she had moved to Belper to live with her paternal grandparents on Swinney Lane
and worked as a “house servant”.[77] John Hatfield was her sweetheart but this
relationship was discouraged by her family.
She met and married Godfrey Litchfield on 16 March 1853 in St Peters
Church in Derby. [78]
Finding
employment on boats traveling between England, Australia and New Zealand, Godfrey left Bristol England working
on the Ship Protector. He arrived in Melbourne, Australia on 16 Aug
1853.[79] Dorothy lived on the farm in Heage caring for
Godfrey’s aged parents. She climbed up
the narrow stairway to their room bringing them their meals, bath water and
sanitary conveniences. She probably
stayed with her own mother about 15 miles to the north in Nottingham since her
first son William Litchfield was born there 1 July 1853.[80]
Dorothy’s
friend Miss Kirkwood invited her to attend a religious meeting where an Elder
Charles W Penrose was speaking. Due to
her religious nature, Dorothy was anxious to hear the message of this “new
religion” taught by the Mormons; however, religious prejudice was strong. Her in-laws called Mormons “awful people” and
referred to the church as “that mob rotten religion”. She allowed her friend to persuade her to see
what it was all about and gained a burning testimony of the truthfulness of
their doctrines. She was baptized into
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 11 May 1854 in Nottingham.[81]
Godfrey’s
family objected strongly to Dorothy’s new religion. Just months before their second son was to be
born, Godfrey demanded Dorothy give up her new religion. He said it was either him or that rotten
religion and she must make a choice. She
begged him not to make her choose and not to break up their home but she could
not deny what she knew to be true.
Godfrey slammed the door behind him and never returned. Dorothy moved back to Nottingham where her
second son, Joseph was born on 17 March 1859.
Dorothy’s mother died a few months before Joseph’s birth. Her own extended family was hostile toward
her due to her religious beliefs. There
was nothing left for Dorothy in England.
She made plans to immigrate to Utah.
She lived in Belper on Field Street with her two sons and younger
brother Thomas. She found a job as a
warehouse hand[82]
and saved as much money as she could. Dorothy, William and little Joseph
arrived in New York on 22 May 1861 on the ship Underwriter. [83] They arrived in Utah four months later after
having crossed the plains in relief wagons sent from Salt Lake.
Dorothy
married three more times while living in Utah.
Her second marriage ended as her first, in divorce. Her third marriage left her a widow. Her fourth marriage brought her much
happiness for over twenty years because her childhood sweetheart John Hatfield,
who had also joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and immigrated
to Utah, found her. She said this was
her only true love. Dorothy J. Hatfield died
27 Aug 1903 in Goshen, Utah, Utah, USA.[84]
Godfrey continued working and
traveling on boats. He traveled from
Australia to New Zealand in 1863. Eventually
he started farming again after settling in Christchurch, New Zealand where he
married a widow, Caroline Denny on 22 August 1873. In 1882 he was a farmer at Papanui, (a suburb
of Christchurch) New Zealand. His farm
was valued at 100 pounds.
He died Jun 7, 1885 in
Christchurch, New Zealand.[85] The Christchurch Press reported on Friday,
June 1855,
"On Monday evening last a man named
Godfrey Lichfield cut his throat in a paddock close by his home at Harewood
Road. He had been ill for some
time. On this occasion he had just
driven into town and on returning left his trap and went straight to the
paddock. The boy who was driving with
him had meal in the house, and then went into the paddock and found his master
just in the act of cutting his throat.
He pulled the razor out of his hand, but the mischief was done, and
although medical assistance was procured, the unhappy man sank and died
yesterday morning at 7 o'clock. An
inquest will be held."

Lucy Litchfield, 5th child of Godfrey and
Lucy:
Lucy Litchfield was
baptized on 7th Jan 1824 in the Heage Chapel on the same day as her older
brother Godfrey. The family was living
on a farm in Heage, Derbyshire, England.[88] Lucy was the middle child. She had 2 older brothers and two older
sisters with five younger brothers joining the family after her. The family farm produced crops and raised
animals. Lucy’s mother walked to the
Belper Market each week to sell farm produce and barter for the families needs. Lucy probably accompanied her mother on some
of these weekly outings. She probably
spent a lot of time caring after her younger brothers as well. At seventeen, she had already found
employment outside of her home, working as a female servant and living with
James and Elizabeth Allen in Castle, Nottinghamshire. [89] James was a baker so perhaps she helped in
the Bakery.
Lucy’s future husband, Isaac
Hodgkinson, was baptized on 14 May 1820 in Parish Duffield, Derbyshire,
England. His father Edward Hodgkinson
was a laborer.[90] Isaac might have had a run-in with the law
and his future father-in-law, Godfrey Litchfield at the age of 23. The Derby Mercury reported the following
incident on August 30, 1843: “Isaac Hodgkinson, of Belper, committed to
hard labour for 2 months, for being found in the house of Godfrey Litchfield,
for the purpose of committing a felony.”[91]
Lucy married Isaac on 4
March 1845 in the Parish Church of Duffield, Derbyshire, England. Isaac was working as a “tailor”.[92] Their first child, Herbert Hodgkinson was
born Dec 1844 in Belper.[93] In
1851 the family is living in Heage where Isaac is working as a tailor.[94] William was born in 1852. Both William and his big brother Isaac were
baptized on the same day, 22 Aug 1852 in Hazelwood, Derbyshire, England.[95]
Their father was working as a “victualler” which
means he sold food and drink or he was an innkeeper. Two years later a daughter
joined the family, Eliza Ann Hodgkinson was baptized on 24 Sep 1854 in Heage,
Derbyshire, England. The family was still
living in Heage and Isaac was working as a Tailor.[96]
Three years later, Lucy gave birth to
twin boys, Isaac and Noah after another three year gap, Edward was born.[97] Anna was born in 1863 and George, their last
son, arrived in 1867, one year after the oldest son, Herbert married. The
family lived in the “Spanker Inn” where Isaac and Lucy both worked as tailors
and their children attended school.[98]
In
1875, their oldest son, Herbert Hodgkinson dies at the age of 31[99] leaving a wife and two small children. Six years later, Eliza Ann is 26 and still
living at home doing the housework. Noah
is 23 and working as a groom and their youngest son, George is working with his
father as a tailor. [100] In 1891, twenty-five year old George is the
only child living with his parents. He
is assisting his father in the family tailor business. [101] Lucy died the next year in early January at the age of 68. She was buried in the Parish of Heage,
Derbyshire, England on 5 January 1892.[102] In 1901, Isaac age eighty was still living in
Heage. Fifty year old Sarah Holmes is
his housekeeper. He was still working as
a “gentleman’s tailor”.[103] Isaac Hodgkinson, died at the age of 85. He was buried in Belper in March 1904.[104]

Thomas Litchfield, 6th child of Godfrey and
Lucy:
Thomas was baptized on 27
Aug 1826 in the parish of Belper. [113] He grew up on a farm in Heage, Derbyshire,
England just a few miles north of the booming industrial town of Belper. He was a middle child being the oldest of the
five younger boys. He had two older
brothers and 3 older sisters. At the age
of 15, he was living with his oldest brother William (25) and sister-in-law Ann
Litchfield in Heage, Derbyshire, England.[114]
At some point in the next
ten years, he moved back home to help his father farm their 65 acres. [115] One of Thomas’ older sisters, Eliza had
married John James Barker who was managing the Angel Inn in Belper. The following newspaper article was published
on Wednesday 19, 1860, “Thomas Litchfield
of Toadmoor, was charge by police constable Carter with stealing three cow
chains, the property of Mr. Barker, Angel Inn.
Belper. – He remained till Wednesday.” The Thomas Litchfield In this newspaper
could be the Thomas Litchfield of this report.
His brother William moved to Toadmoor sometime before 1846. Thomas had lived with his brother as a
teenager and perhaps had moved back there.
Or, it might not be “this Thomas” at all. There is another Thomas Litchfield in the
area, son of Charles, who married Margaret Haslam. The next year however, in
1861, “our Thomas”, age 32, is unmarried and living in Heage with his aged
parents, Godfrey (73) and Lucy (72).
Godfrey’s occupation is farmer and Thomas’s occupation is farmer’s
servant.[116] It appears Thomas never married.
Patrick Litchfield, 7th Child of Godfrey and Lucy
Litchfield
Patrick was baptized 28
Aug 1828 in Chapelry of Belper. [117] He grew up on a farm in Heage, Derbyshire,
England. He was the second oldest of the
five younger boys in the family. He had
three old brothers and two older sisters. [118] At the age of twelve, Patrick is living in
Crich with George and Mary Bowmer about twenty miles south in Barrow upon
Trent, Derbyshire, England working as a laborer.[119] At twenty-two, Patrick, still single is
lodging at #50 Green Lane in Derby, Derbyshire, England and working as a
chandler.[120] Two years later he married Eleanor Clifford
at St. Peters Church, Derbyshire, England in 1853.[121] Eleanor was from Kegworth, Leicester, England,
the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Clifford.
She was baptized on 19 Jun 1831.[122] George Litchfield was born to them in 1855[123]
and Sarah Litchfield was born the next
year in 1856. [124] Both children were baptized on 31 Oct 1856 at
St Peter’s Church in Belper, Derbyshire, England. The family was living on Bag Lane in Derby
where Patrick ran a pub.[125]
[126]
It appears their son George died at the
age of seven. [127]
A year later the family experienced another serious trauma. It was recorded in The Derby Mercury on Oct 21, 1863 in the Borough Police Court
Section:
“Patrick
Litchfield, landlord of the Woodman’s Stroke, Baglane, was brought up on remand
from the day previous, charged with beating his wife, Ellen Litchfield. – The
complainant said on Saturday evening he got her upstairs, beat her all over the
body, and said that as there were no witnesses, he would murder her. He knocked her down, and inflicted a wound on
her leg by throwing a pail at her. She
wished, however, to give him another trial. – Mr. Hilton said in these cases he
wished it to be understood that he had the power to prosecute, even if the wife
wished to withdraw the charge. – Inspector Fearn said the language prisoner
made use of was dreadful. – The Bench said they should send him to gaol for 28
days, with hard labour. He deserved six
months. – The complainant begged hard for her husband to be allowed another
trial, but the Bench said a month in prison would do him good.”[128]
Clara was baptized in
1864 at St Peter’s Church in Derby, Derbyshire, England.[129] The family relocated to Leeds, Yorkshire,
England where Patrick worked as a tallow chandler, Eleanor a dress maker and
fourteen year old Sarah Jane as a weaver.[130] Patrick died in the 1st quarter of
1880 at the age of 52 in Nottinghamshire.[131]
Eleanor passed away sometime after 1911.
She spent the last 30 years of her life living with her daughter Clara
Louise and son-in-law Allan Towle. In
1911, they were living in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. [132]

Noah Litchfield, 8th child of Godfrey and
Lucy:
Noah
was baptized on 29 Aug 1830 in Belper, Derbyshire, England. [136] He had four older brothers and three older
sisters. He grew up on a farm in Heage,
Derbyshire, England, By the time he was
ten years old, only four of the ten children were still living at home, his
older brother Godfrey and two younger brothers, Octavius, age 8 and George, age
2. The family was still living in Heage where Godfrey was farming. [137] Noah died at the age of 19.
He was buried on 2 Nov 1849 at St Peter’s Church (Heage Chapelry).[138] Death Notice for Noah Litchfield was
published in The Derby Mercury in Nov
1849. Under the Deaths Column it reads “On the 29th Oct sincerely
regretted by his relatives and friends, Noah, the fifth son of Godfrey
Litchfield, Heage Commons, aged 19.”[139] He did not marry.
Octavius Litchfield, 9th Child of Godfrey and Lucy Litchfield
Octavius Litchfield was baptized 9
March 1834 in Heage, Derbyshire, England.[140]
His name would indicate he was either
the 8th child or the 8th boy but he was in fact neither
of these being the 9th child and the seventh boy. There is four years between Noah and Godfrey,
perhaps a 7th son had been born between them but died after
birth? Octavius was the baby of the
family for five years. He grew up on a
farm learning his future trade from his father and older brothers. The family farmed 65 acres[141]
just a few miles north of Belper. At
twenty-seven, Octavius married twenty-one year old Sarah Spendlove on Christmas
day 1858 at the Parish Church in Duffield, Derbyshire, England.[142]
Sarah was born 1837 in Shottle, Derbyshire,
England to George Spendlove.[143] Their
first child was a daughter, Lucy, born Jun 1860 in Belper.[144]
The family lived on Swinney Lane in Belper.
Octavius was a farmer.[145] It appears Octavius had a little trouble one
day with a hired farm servant. The
following article was printed in The Derby Mercury, on Wednesday June 17, 1863
records “William Nadin, farm servant, was
brought up in custody, under warrant, charged by Octavius Litchfield, farmer,
of Belper, with absconding from his service.- The Bench ordered him to pay the
costs, and dismissed him from the service.”[146]
Sarah and Octavius welcomed their
first son, George Litchfield into the family in 1862. [147]
Godfrey Litchfield came into their family in March 1864, Belper, Derbyshire.[148] After twelve years of marriage, Octavius and
Sarah were living at Lawn Nook in Belper, Derbyshire, England. Their three children are living in the home,
Lucy Ellen (11), George (9), and Godfrey (7). Octavius is not longer farming but rather his occupation
was listed as a laborer.[149]
A son, Octavius Litchfield is born June 1873.
His birth is recorded in Belper.[150]
Another son, William Litchfield was born early 1875, Belper, Derbyshire.[151] Daughter Eliza arrived in 1878.[152] Their last son Noah Litchfield was born 1879,
Belper, Derbyshire. [153] Within a year of Noah’s birth, his mother
Sarah Spendlove died at the age of 44.
She was buried 30 Oct 1880 at St. Peter’s Church, Belper, Derbyshire,
England.[154]
Octavius became a widower at the age
of 46. He had six children at home, the
youngest Noah, just and infant. His
oldest daughter Lucy Ellen had married and was living in Belper as well. [155] Octavius hired twenty-two year old Selina
Bell to help the family with their day to day needs. The older boys were helping out as well;
eighteen year old George was working as a wire maker and sixteen year old
Godfrey as a bottle maker. [156] Something happened to Octavius. Perhaps he broke under the strain of losing
his wife and trying to care for all of his children. Perhaps he drowned his sorrows in alcohol. He seems to have disappeared for about a
twenty year period. In 1891, his oldest
daughter Lucy and her husband are caring for their own five children as well as
Lucy’s younger siblings, Octavius (Jr) age 18, Eliza, age 14 and Noah, age
12. Sometime before 1901, Octavius
entered The Union House. In 1901, he
listed as a pauper. In 1911, he is
listed as a patient, formerly a farmer.
He died later that year at the age of 78 and was buried the Belper. [157]

twenty-eight year old Hannah Brooks on Oct 28, 1870 in Duffield, Derbyshire,
England.[168] George and Hannah started out their married

joiner again. He kept this occupation
until his death in 1882. He was buried
on 26 Aug 1882 at St. Peter’s Church, Belper, Derbyshire, England.[173]
Hannah lived out her life in
