Questions about Thomas Litchfield

There seems to me some discrepancies about Thomas.

  • My grandma Beulah Lichfield's research lists Thomas as unmarried.
  • The Descendants of Godfrey Litchfield from Glenda Wright (the Canadian side of the family) has the following information about Thomas.
Thomas Litchfield was christened on 27 Aug 1826 in Belper, Derbyshire, England.
Notes: Thomas was in Heaage in the 1851 census in the same household as Godfrey and Lucy,
aged  24.  Was this the Thomas who was living in his uncle James' lands at Chevinside near Belper
          when James died in 1873?

Thomas married Margaret Haslam, daughter of William Haslam on 28 Aug 1842 in Alfreton,
Derbyshire, England.  Margaret was born about 1830 in England.

  • According to new.familysearch.org, Thomas married Margaret Haslam (born 1828) on 28 Aug 1842 in Alfreton, Derby, England.
  • I found a marriage record for a Thomas Litchfield and a Margaret Haslam in the Birth, Marriage and Death Index for England and Wales in Belper in the July - Sept quarter of 1842, Vol 19, page 307 (Findmypast.com)  (My document # Thomas 4)
  • I do not doubt that a Thomas Litchfield married a Margaret Haslam but I am not convinced it is the Thomas Litchfield I am looking for because if he really married in 1842, he would have just been 14 years old at the time of his marriage.  Also, I found him in the 1851 and 1861 Census' living with his parents still in both of those census' and listed as unmarried.
  • I need to either order the marriage record for the above Thomas and Margaret or try to find it in the parish records at the Family History Library or maybe I will get lucky and someone will see this blog that can maybe shed some light on the subject.
  • I am also intrigued by the question posed in Glenda's information about a Thomas Litchfield living with his Uncle James in 1873.  I need to follow up on that lead as well.  Maybe I can find Thomas in the 1871 census in Chevinside or a will for his Uncle Thomas.
  • It could be he married young and was widowed young but 14 seems awfully young to marry and why didn't the census records list him as a widower in that case?  I could maybe look for a death record between 1842 and 1851 for a Margaret Litchfield in the Belper area.
  • It could be he wasn't really 15 at the 1841 census since that is the census where the ages were rounded, so he could have been anywhere between 15 - 19.  But when you look at the 1851 and 1861 Census records where they did not round the ages, his is consistent with the younger age, in fact he seems to get younger each time since in 1851 he is 24 (not 25) and in 1861 he is 32 (not 35).  I know the 32 can not be right since he was baptized in 1826.   So if we was baptized shortly after birth, the youngest he could be in 1861 is 35.  If he was not baptized right after birth but some time later he would be even older than 35 in 1861.
  • It seems very unlikely my Thomas is the one who married Margaret Haslam.
  • A search of other Litchfield families in the area could help identify who the Thomas is that married Margaret but the best way to solve this mystery would be to get a copy of the marriage certificate to see who his father was.

Birth: Thomas was baptized on 27 Aug 1826 in the parish of Belper.  His family was living in Belper at this time and his father was farming.
1841 Census: Thomas age 15, was living with his oldest brother William (25) and sister-in-law Ann Litchfield in Ripley, Derbyshire, England.
1851 Census: Thomas, age 24, was living with his parents, Godfrey and Lucy Litchfield and three of his brothers, Godfrey (28), Octavius (16) and George (12) in Heage. His father Godfrey is farming 65 acres.
1861 Census: Thomas, age 32, is unmarried and living in Heage with his aged parents, Godfrey (73) and Lucy (72).  Godfrey’s occupation is farmer and Thomas’s occupation is farmer’s servant.
