Lucy Litchfield Hodgkinson baptized 7 Jan 1824

Lucy Litchfield, 5th child of Godfrey and Lucy

1820 Birth: Isaac Hodgkinson, husband to be of Lucy Litchfield, was baptized on 14 May 1820 in Parish Duffield, Derbyshire, England.  His father Edward Hodgkinson was a laborer.[1]
1824 Birth: Lucy Litchfield was baptized on 7th Jan 1824 in the Heage Chapel.  Her father was a farmer.[2]
1841 Census: Lucy (17) was living with James and Elizabeth Allen in Castle, Notthinghamshire.  She was working as a “F.S”.  James was a Baker.[3]
1845 Marriage:  Lucy married Isaac Hodgkinson on 4 March 1845 in the Parish Church of Duffield, Derbyshire, England.  Isaac was working as a “tailor”.[4]
1845 Birth: Herbert Hodgkinson
1851 Census: Lucy is living with her husband Isaac Hodgkinson and their 6 year old son Herbert in Heage, Derbyshire, England.  Isaac’s occupation is “taylor”.[5]
1852 Baptisms: Herbert and William Isaac Hodgkinson were baptized on the same day, 22 Aug 1852 in Hazelwood, Derbyshire, England.[6]    Their father was working as a “victualler” which means he sold food and drink or he was an innkeeper.
1854 Baptism: Eliza Ann Hodkinson was baptized on 24 Sep 1854 in Heage, Derbyshire, England.  The family was living in Heage and Isaac was working as a Tailor.[7]
1861 Census: Lucy is living with her husband Isaac Hodgkinson in Heage with their 6 children.  They are Herbert ( 16), William (9), Eliza (6), Isaac and Noah (both 4) and Edward (1).  Isaac and Herbert both are listed at “taylor” for their occupations.[8]
1866 Marriage: Herbert Hodgkinson married his first cousin Elizabeth Litchfield (daughter of William) on June 30, 1866 at Saint Edmunds in Allestree, Derbyshire, England.[9]
1871 Census: Lucy (48) is living in the “Span_la Inn” in Heage with her husband Isaac and 6 children.  They are Eliza (16), Isaac (13), Edward (11), Noah (11), Anna (8) and George (4).  Isaac and Lucy are both working as tailors.  Eliza does not have an occupation listed and the rest of the children are scholars.[10]
1881 Census: Lucy is living on Dung Hill in Heage with her husband Isaac and 3 children.  They are Eliza Ann (26), Noah (23) and George (14).  Isaac and George are both tailors.  Eliza Ann does housework and Noah is a groom.[11]
1887 Marriage: Eliza Ann Hogkinson married Hezekiah Twigg in 1887 at St Matthew, Pentrich, Derbyshire.[12] This is probably the right Eliza but it needs to be verified.  See Recommendations Section.
1891 Census: Lucy (67) is living  in Lower Hartshay with his husband Isaac (70) and their son George (25).  Isaac‘s occupation is tailor.  George is a tailor’s assistant to his father.[13]

1929 Death: Eliza Ann Hogkinson Twigg died in 1929 at the age of 74 in Ripley, Derbyshire, England.[16]

Recommendations:
·        Request FHL film # 1041435 to obtain a copy of Herbert and William Isaac Hodgkinson’s, son’s of Lucy Litchfield and Isaac Hodgkinson baptism certificates.[17] I already extracted the information from this films but I neglected to make a copy of the certificate.
·        Request FHL Film #1041436 to obtain a copy of Eliza Ann Hodgkinson, daughter of Lucy Litchfield and Isaac Hodgkinson baptism certificates.[18] I already extracted the information from this films but I neglected to make a copy of the certificate.
·        William Isaac Hodgkinson, son of Lucy, grandson of Godfrey.  Find the marriage record for William Hodgkinson and Mary Ellen Goodwin on Family History film # 1751991 and #1041916 to verify this is not the correct William Hodgkinson.[19]
·        Eliza Ann Hodgkinson, daughter of Lucy, granddaughter of Godfrey.  I found two marriage records for Eliza at findmypast.com.  It appears Eliza married Hezekiah Twigg first in 1887, then she married George White in 1895.  These marriage records can be found on the FHL Film 2080803.[20]  Evidently, I looked at them once but neglected to make a copy of them.
·        Herbert Hodgkinson.  I found a burial record for a Herbert Hodgkinson in Dec. 1932 at the age of 78.[21]  This record needs to be investigated.
·        William Isaac Hodgkinson.  I found several burial possibilities for William. See recommendations section.
·        William Isaac Hodgkinson, I could not find any marriage information for him. I did find a record for a William Hodgkinson married Mary Ellen Goodwin on Oct 12, 1879 in Chapel-En-Le-Frith, Derbyshire, England, whose name was William but the groom’s birth date is too late and his father’s name is William not Isaac so it is most likely not this William.[22]
·        Herbert Hodgkinson, son of Lucy, Grandson of Godfrey.  I found a burial record for a Herbert Hodgkinson dying at age 78 in 1932.[23]  I need to check the census records to see when the record for Herbert ended so I could make an educated guess as to the time of his death.
·        William Isaac Hodgkinson, son of Lucy. I found three possible death records for a William Hodgkinson but no record for a William Isaac Hodgkinson.  The first death record was in the Heage Parish on 28 June 1876 at the age of 24.[24]  This matches the location, name and age of William Hodgkinson.  However, if the marriage record for William and to Mary Ellen Goodwin in 1879 is correct, this death record for 1876 would not be the correct death record.  I need to get a copy of the marriage to discover the name of William’s parents. The second burial for a William Hodgkinson occurred in June 1915 (Belper).[25]  This William was 61 at the time of death putting his birth year at about 1854.  I have a christening record for William for 1852.  It is a possibility. The third possibility is for a William Hodgkinson buried March 1921, age 73 in Belper.[26]  This would put his birth year at about 1848.  This is still in the range of possibilities, his parents were married in 1845 and he was christened in 1854. A search of the census records should determine if William lived past the age of 24 and also help track the two William Hodgkinsons that appeared to be living in the Belper area around the turn of the century.

  1. Hi Kathy. I came across your page here looking for a Hannah Hodgkinson who married a Thomas Shore of Heage. You might be interested (if you have not already seen it) that in the 1851 Census, Godfrey (a farmer of 65 acres) and Lucy Litchfield were living two doors away from the Hodgkinsons (Edward, a widower, had a number of children, including the Hannah that I am researching). Isaac may have been an elder son of this Edward, and Lucy the daughter of Godfrey and Lucy Litchfield.

  2. Kathy, Ted again. I am wondering if you have come across a Martha Litchfield. She is listed in the 1881 Census as living with Isaac and Annie Shore - she is 14 years old, a servant and a niece according to the census. It would be much appreciated if you could help link her back to the Shores - I cannot find in my tree a Shore that married a Litchfield. Thanks, I can be reached at tedshore at sympatico dot ca.

    best regards,
